Bringing the Heat: Coterra Energy Sponsors the Sam Steel Society’s Chile Roast Event in D.C.

Coterra Energy Sponsors the Sam Steel Society's Chile Roast Event in D.C. | Well Said Coterra

There’s something magical about the smell of fresh-roasted green chile that instantly transports you back to the high deserts of New Mexico. This August, Coterra Energy had the privilege of experiencing it at “The Fix,” the annual chile roast organized by NMSU’s Sam Steel Society just outside of Washington, D.C. Bringing New Mexico to alumni and expats in the D.C. area, “The Fix” has become a cherished tradition that our company is proud to support, marking our second year as a sponsor of this nostalgic event.

For alumni who grew up surrounded by chile fields or remember family traditions around roasting season, the scent alone brings back fond memories of home. The event, now a staple for New Mexico transplants in the area, is a chance to relive those memories and reconnect with the flavors and culture of New Mexico, right in the heart of Alexandria, Virginia.

Boxes of peppers are brought to “The Fix,” an annual chile roast organized by NMSU’s Sam Steel Society to bring a little taste of home to New Mexican alumni and expats in the Washington D.C. area, all in support of a great cause.

Originally launched by the NMSU Alumni Association, the D.C. chile roast took a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in 2023, the Sam Steel Society brought it back with new energy, branding it as “The Fix.” This event wouldn’t be possible without the collaborative efforts of NMSU’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, and dedicated supporters like Coterra Energy.

This year, the Sam Steel Society sold its entire allotment of chile, totaling about 2,300 pounds, with all proceeds going directly to student scholarships at NMSU. The excitement was palpable as alumni gathered, catching the unmistakable aroma of roasting chile that seemed to make everyone stop in their tracks. The atmosphere was full of camaraderie, with attendees sharing stories of their favorite New Mexican traditions and how they keep those traditions alive from afar.

Becca Myers and Bill DesRosiers from Coterra Energy volunteered on the day of the event, working alongside Jeff Witte, New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture; Larry Regan, President of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau; and the leadership of the Sam Steel Society. Their enthusiasm and dedication added to the warmth of the occasion, exemplifying the spirit of community that defines this event.

Jennifer Ryder Fox, president of the Sam Steel Council, expressed the joy of reconnecting with alumni through something so central to New Mexican heritage. “Seeing their smiles as they walked up and watching them breathe in the aroma of roasting chile – we just knew they were smelling home,” she said. “We’re already looking forward to next year’s roast.”

For Coterra Energy, it’s an honor to bring a little piece of New Mexico to the D.C. area. This tradition has become one of our company’s most meaningful partnerships, and the team is thrilled to support such a fun, purpose-driven event. We’re already looking forward to helping bring “The Fix” back to D.C. next year!
