Cabot has always placed a value on being a part of the community. The August 1956 issue of The Flame highlights the awarding of seven scholarships to university students. This award by the Cabot Foundation was given to students who wanted to study in the technical fields. Today, almost 60 years later, Cabot still supports education through endowments and sponsoring programs.

The recipients of the scholarships majored in chemical, mechanical, and petroleum engineering. Geology students were also up for consideration in the program. Much like the internships of today, a scholarship student could work at the company during their free time to explore the energy industry. Besides being interested in the field, these scholarships were given based on “test results, character, leadership, and other indications of potential for success.” Another Cabot scholarship from the time, the Godfrey L. Cabot Scholarship, was part of a private fund for the education of the sons of Cabot employees.

Today, Cabot supports education through endowments, scholarships, and supporting community programs. Every year, select students at the Susquehanna Career & Technology Center (SCCTC) receive scholarships to further their education. In September of this year, SCCTC received a donation of pipes to be used as practice for students of the welding program. This donation came from Cabot and the Linde Corporation. In the community, Cabot also acts as one of the sponsors for the Junior Achievement’s Careers in Energy program. Cabot has also underwritten the costs for iPads and held a benefit with Sardoni Construction for the Scranton School for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Children. These are just a few of the ways that Cabot continues to sponsor education.

In 1956, The Flame reported  that through these scholarships were so strongly supported because they “give the younger generation a chance to obtain a better education so that they will be able to build a better world in which to live.” This sentiment is still one that is echoed today. Thanks to The Flame, we do know that scholarships have been awarded consistently since at least 1958. Moving forward, Cabot will continue to support education.
