This is the driving thought behind  Lackawanna College’s social media initiatives and it’s what makes them a great choice for our #FF this week. This school was founded in 1894 and its history tells of how the college founded as the “Scranton Business College” evolved into its current form. Today this school is home to about 1,500 students and is made up of the main campus in Scranton, along with four other satellite centers in New Milford, Lake Region, Towanda, and Hazleton. The college’s Twitter handle is @LCScranton and has been active for about three years. It aims to reach those who are not currently students at Lackawanna by focusing on potential students, community members, alumni, and donors. But this doesn’t mean they forget about the current students; the account regularly tweets about school information and events on campus. We had the chance to speak with Chris Kucharski who is the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications Lackawanna College. He was able to give us much more insight into how the @LCScranton handle operates.Who is the voice behind the @LCScranton handle? The content actually comes from various departments throughout the college which reflect the activities surrounding the Mission of Lackawanna College. The content is very diverse as it could be a student accomplishment, staff or faculty or achievement or a College activity or initiative. The posts are physically posted by the Marketing/Communications Department. Why did you decide to join the Twitterverse?Social Media, in general, is just one way for Lackawanna College to show the world all the good things that are happening here. If you are trying to get a message out, you need to be involved in Twitter and Facebook.   Communication is very important in our society and Twitter is now a key component of our culture. What is the most successful aspect of the account? As mentioned above, Lackawanna College has many great qualities and we have been able to share them with many people. When we launch new programs like we have over recent years, such as our Petroleum & Natural Gas or Entrepreneurship programs, we have been able to get the word out about these programs using more than traditional advertising. What other social media outlets do you utilize?Lackawanna College currently also uses Facebook and YouTube. We have multiple Facebook pages representing our five locations and various College special interests such as Athletics, Student Life, Alumni, Environmental Institute and Community Concerts. Is there anything else you’d like to add about @LCScranton?There is no doubt Twitter and Social Media have changed the way we communicate and spread our messages. @LCScranton is just one tool that has helped Lackawanna College grow over recent years. As new platforms emerge, we hope to engage them and use them to relay our message and mission to everyone.
