February can be a slow month for events especially with the unpredictable weather. So we’re giving you a heads up about the Lackawanna Home Builders Association Home Showcase taking place at the Mall at Steamtown from February 21-23, 2014. And they host a pretty nifty children’s event:  The “It’s a Snap” LEGO building competition.

The Juried LEGO Children’s Building Contest is a great opportunity for kids to unleash their creativity and really show their skills with the little plastic blocks. Cabot is sponsoring the event and Bill desRosiers was present for last year’s competition and saw some great creations.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 22 but children must be preregistered for the event and only 40 contestants are able to participate so make sure you get yours in early. To sign up, print a registration form and send it in along with the $5.00 registration fee.
There are two age categories: 5 – 8 years & 9–12 years and first, second and third place will be awarded in each category.
Here are the details for February 22nd:
Check‐In: 1:00 PM
Event: 1:30‐2:30 PM
Judging: 2:45 PM
LHBA will provide all LEGOs required for the activity

LEGOs are made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). This plastic is revered for its mold-able flexibility and durability, among other things. ABS is derived from acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene all of which are derivatives of oil and natural gas. ABS is used for many more things besides LEGOs including musical instruments, luggage and golf clubs.
