Cabot has a wonderful relationship with local farmers – many being landowners in Susquehanna County. Farmers provide fresh produce, milk, eggs, and meat to towns and cities around the country.

October 12th is National Farmer’s Day, and to celebrate, we would like to take the time to promote and encourage the support of farmers across the country.

Things you can do to support your local farmers:

  1. Purchase Produce from Local Farmers Markets

This is a no-brainer – support local farmers by buying their produce straight from the source at farmers markets! Whether it’s a roadside stand or a large indoor market, visiting and buying food from farmers markets directly supports local farmers.

  1. Purchase and Cook with Seasonally Grown Produce

We all know that certain seasons bring certain types of produce harvests. This can also depend on your geographic location, too. For example, in Pennsylvania, apples, beets, broccoli, and brussels sprouts are in season in early October. Buying and eating food that is in season means it’s fresher, tastier, and more nutritious than food consumed out of season. Making sure you buy food that’s currently in season helps to support local farmers who work hard to grow it.

  1. Ask Local Grocery Stores to Sell Locally Sourced Food

Some grocery stores sell locally grown produce, milk, eggs, and meat – but then some don’t. If you live in a city and farmer’s markets are hard to come by, then grocery stores are your only option. If you can’t find a grocery store near you that sells products from local farms, then voice that preference to the store’s management. If enough people demonstrate their willingness to support local farms, then the store might too!
