Utilizing Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in Our Land Department

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Eric Seagle, a member of our Land Department. Eric is based out of our Tulsa, Oklahoma office and is the Land Systems and Process Lead. When we reached out to Eric, he was thrilled to talk to us about the digital transformation that Land has undergone in recent years. In particular, he touched on how a pair of data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) platforms are being relied upon to improve the department’s ability to organize and analyze data. 

Eric began his career with Coterra (Legacy Cimarex) in 2017. Initially, he was a member of the Exploration team within the Anadarko Basin. Just over two years ago, he transferred to the Land Department, where he was tasked with reinvigorating the team and improving the efficiency of operational processes.

Building a More Efficient Organization

“Sometimes people are scared about technology and innovation, thinking the goal is to get rid of their jobs, but what we’re really striving for is the elimination of wasteful processes that aren’t driving value for the company,” said Eric. “I’ve been tasked with creating efficiencies that allow people to spend their time on things that advance their skills and drive value for all of Coterra. Our ultimate goal isn’t to get rid of jobs; it’s to make people’s lives easier while building a more efficient organization.”

Uncovering the Right Tools

ThoughtTrace is a document understanding software that utilizes AI to analyze documents and organize the data into a single database. It’s able to quickly sift through hundreds of thousands of documents to accurately return the information you need.

The second tool that Eric was instrumental in deploying across the Land department was Spotfire. He shared that he believes this software is “Land’s most impactful tool.” It offers one robust platform that allows users to securely connect to and build reports from company-wide data sources. By leveraging this tool to build interactive dashboards and run advanced analytics, end users are quickly connected to an unlimited stream of data. 

These tools undoubtedly make data analysis a more efficient process. Additionally, they ensure that the data being relied on throughout the regular course of business is consistently accessible and accurate, which is just as important.
